Spring Into Books: Interview with Dianne Venetta

notwithoutyou-197x300 Grad student, Lisa Richardson, scours the high country in search of her beloved boreal toad. The amphibian is in danger of extinction, a fate she is determined to change. Single-minded in her focus, Lisa doesn’t realize that she’s being followed by a mysterious stranger. Enter McIntyre Walsh. Ex-marine with a heart of gold, this man lives and breathes duty. Protection. Content with his self-exile on a mountaintop in Colorado, he inadvertently witnesses a female hiker in danger, a situation he cannot ignore yet is unable to rectify. When their paths cross, Lisa and Walsh refuse to stray from their avowed goals and carry on–despite the other. It isn’t until a killer ramps up his game that both are forced to relent. Battling the rugged terrain of the Rocky Mountains and an undeniable attraction between them, Lisa and Walsh must work together against the odds if they intend to get off the mountain alive.

INTERVIEW:
1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m a stay-at-home mom first and a writer second. I figured I’d work into my next career slowly—though I’m not sure averaging five books a year is what some would call “slowly!”—and devote myself to the early years of my kids’ lives and so far, so good. I’m thrilled to be there for soccer games and tennis matches, school plays and special events, but I’m also grateful to have an outlet for my creativity. When I’m not writing, reading or being mom, you’ll find me out in the garden. I find no better way to toil the time away than wandering among the rows of my organic garden. It’s quite satisfying. Some days it’s a lot of work, mind you, but it’s well worth it.
 2. What inspired your book?
Not Without You was inspired from my many trips to Colorado. I love hiking and being outdoors and I thought, why not share this extraordinary place with readers? Not many will ever experience a hike above ten thousand feet so I’ve done my best to bring it home for them. Lisa, my heroine, is what I fondly refer to as a “granola.” We both like being outdoors, working in harmony with nature, eating healthy and of course, ruggedly-handsome men. Enter McIntyre Walsh. This man would make any woman want to head to high country!
3. What are you working on now?
Currently I’m working on book #3 in the Silver Creek series, All About You. Wainwright Ranch is a working ranch where terminally-ill children can find unique healing. For a few weeks in their young lives they’re not treated different because of their illness but as productive members of a team doing a job that requires results. Katharine Wainwright is tasked with saving the ranch from bankruptcy. It’s her mother’s dream Since her mother’s death, finances have been in a free fall.
4. Who is your favorite character?
That’s a tough one. I don’t have a character per se but instead, love each one for different reasons. Lisa is my kind of friend to go hiking with and enjoy the wilderness—except we wouldn’t be chasing toads. Walsh is definitely my kind of man to take camping—especially by the light of the campfire.
5. Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
The plot is loosely based on real events. Lisa’s dedication to her toads is a very real devotion for many in Colorado, while Walsh is pure imagination. Okay, he’s fantasy material, straight up. But we all need a little steam in our lives, don’t we?

About Dianne:

Dianne lives in Central Florida with her husband, two children and part-time Yellow Lab--Cody-body! When not whacking away at her keyboard crafting her next novel you'll find her in their organic garden chasing grasshoppers and plucking hornworms all while drawing wild analogies between kids and plants and men. Definitely men. A girl's gotta have fun, right? When she's not knee-deep in dirt or romance, Dianne contributes garden advice for various websites and volunteers in school gardens (a crazy existence to be sure). But at the end of the day, if she can inspire someone to stop and smell the roses--or rosemary!—kiss their child and spouse good-night, be kind to a neighbor and Mother Earth, then she's done all right.
